HISTORY OF THE FOUNDER MASTER NGUYEN LOC
The late Founding Master NGUYEN Loc, founder of Vovinam Viet Vo Dao, was born on May 24 (the 8th day of the 4th month (lunar calendar)) of the year 1912 in Huu Bang Village, Thach That District, Son Tay Province, now belongs to the suburb of Hanoi.
Founding Master NGUYEN Loc was born and raised at a time when Vietnam was under French colonialism. In his early days he started seeking for ways to help his country and his fellow citizens out of foreign domination.
Founding Master NGUYEN Loc has intensively researched the traditional Vietnamese martial arts and wrestling techniques, as well as Oriental philosophies. These became the foundations for a martial arts style focusing primarily on practical and effective applications.
Thus, the Martial Arts Discipline of Vovinam Viet Vo Dao was founded in 1938. After a successful debut demonstration at the Hanoi Auditorium in the Fall of 1939, Vovinam officially began operation at University of Educations in Hanoi in the Spring of 1940.
1954, Master Nguyen Loc, with his close disciples, opened a very first Vovinam school in Saigon.
Founding Grand Master NGUYEN Loc passed away on the 4th day of the 4th month (lunar calendar) of the year 1960 in Saigon. His successor, Grand Master Le Sang continued Grand Master Nguyen Loc’s mission and had transformed and developed Vovinam to be substantially recognized not only nationally but internationally.
